‘Squid Game’ Director Hwang Dong-hyuk On Season 2: ‘Humanity Is Going To Be Put To A Test Through Those Games Once Again’

After being told that his story was too grotesque and unrealistic, Hwang Dong-hyuk set aside his script for Squid Game for 10 years. When Netflix came looking for overseas content, Hwang took his shot and gave it a drama that quickly became the most-watched series in the streaming service’s history.

CANNES, France -- Lee Jung-jae, the award-winning star of Netflix's “Squid Game,” spent years developing the 1980s-set Korean spy thriller “Hunt” before electing to direct himself. He did it a little reluctantly, without big plans to continue filmmaking. But Lee did have a vision for what it could be — and where it could premiere.“Before deciding to direct, I thought I just wanted to make a very fun film,” Lee says.

Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP) is set to remake Ariel Winograd’s Argentinian comedy Mama Se Fue De Viaje (Ten Days Without Mom) in Turkey and South Korea.

Although a star for nearly 30 years in South Korean films, Lee Jung-Jae recently rocketed to international fame on a whole other level as the star of the television phenomenon, The Squid Game. All of that spotlight will add to interest in Hunt, which he not only stars, produces, co-wrote (with Jo Seung-Hee), but makes his feature film directorial debut, one that just had its World Premiere in the Midnight section of the Cannes Film Festival.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said the show’s second season will be released by the end of 2023 or 2024.The show’s first season broke records for Netflix when it was released last year, with co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirming a second season had been ordered back in January.In an interview with Vanity Fair, Dong-hyuk provided an update on the second season’s progress. The report reads: “Hwang is in the midst of final discussions with Netflix for a second season of Squid Game and anticipates that it could be out by the end of 2023 or 2024.”It states that Dong-hyuk has “about three pages’ worth of ideas that he plans to turn into a script”.Teasing the new season, he added: “Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again.

First, there was Parasite, shaking up the global film sector and snatching Oscar glory. Then, there was Squid Game.

While Netflix is canceling a bunch of projects to curb overspending, there are some originals that keep chugging along thanks to their massive popularity. One of those shows is “Squid Game” which became the most talked-about genre series of 2021 and helped cement that foreign-made originals can compete with western genre stories like “Stranger Things.” The massive hit that hails from South Korea is indeed getting a second season but don’t expect them to rush it.

Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Vanity Fair that he predicts the next batch of episodes won’t be ready for release until the end of 2023 at the earliest.

Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae has opened up about his life since the Netflix series’ viral success and what the show might mean for the future of Korean media.In a recent interview with Deadline, Lee spoke about how, despite the massive international popularity of Squid Game – including critical success at the Critics Choice Awards and the SAG Awards – life has largely stayed the same for him.“I still don’t feel like my life has changed dramatically,” he explained, although, it’s been a different story for his career. The actor noted that the K-drama’s success has opened up “more opportunities to work with great people on more projects”.On the topic of opportunities, Lee touched on how he has “already [been] getting a lot of support” from renowed talent agency Creative Artists Agency, which he signed with earlier this year.

In Squid Game, lead character Seong Gi-hun is a down-on-his-luck gambling addict given a dangerous opportunity to win a fortune and turn his life around by playing deadly children’s games against 456 other cash-strapped no-hopers. Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong, has almost nothing in common with his alter-ego: he is one of South Korea’s biggest stars through films such as Deliver Us from Evil and the Along with the Gods franchise and shows Chief of Staff and Triple.

Black Mirror is in development.Variety reports that a source said that the forthcoming Netflix series is more cinematic in scope and will comprise more episodes than season five, which aired in 2019.The previous three-episode season starred Andrew Scott, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace and Miley Cyrus.As Variety notes, the new season of Black Mirror will be the first since since creator Charlie Brooker and his creative partner Annabel Jones left their production company House of Tomorrow, which was backed and licensed by Endemol Shine Group, in January 2020.Brooker and Jones have since set up their own company, Broke and Bones, which Netflix invested in as part of a five-year arrangement.Part of the reason why there haven’t been any new episodes for three years is because Endemol Shine Group (acquired by Banijay Group in 2020) continued to own the rights to Black Mirror. A license deal between Banijay Rights and Netflix has since been reached.The future of Black Mirror was also in doubt a couple of years ago.
