A speeding driver who ran a red light while under the influence of alcohol and let his wife take the blame has been jailed for causing life-changing injuries to a teenage cyclist.
Jerzy Jozefiak hit a 16-year-old boy on July 9 when he sped through a traffic light at a busy junction - causing catastrophic injuries.
The father-of-three then switched places with his wife and claimed she had been driving at the time of the crash, a court has heard.
Jozefiak, 39, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court after previously pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, Wales Online reports. He has a previous conviction for driving with excess alcohol relating to the same incident.
The court heard that the teenage victim - a talented artist - had to spend eight months in hospital and underwent numerous surgeries, including having a piece of his skull bone removed.
He has been left with serious neurological and physical injuries as a result of the crash, which happened at the junction of Fabian Way and Port Tennant Road in Swansea.
Sian Cutter, prosecuting, said the youngster was cycling when he was hit by a Renault car driven by Jozefiak shortly before 2.30pm.
He struck the windscreen and roof box of the vehicle on impact and was then thrown to the ground, where he skidded around 20 yards. A number of motorists at the junction later reported that the traffic lights were showing red at the time.
Jozefiak then stopped the car in a nearby bus stop and switched places with his wife, who climbed across the passenger seat into the driver's seat. She also told people at the scene she had been driving.
The young boy was left unconscious and bleeding profusely. He had a "partially amputated" arm as well as other wounds.
