Specific group of older people will not get new State Pension payment rates next April

State Pension is a contributions-based benefit that provides essential financial support for 12.6million older people across Great Britain, including more than one million living in Scotland. Across Great Britain, there are now more than 1.4million people over State Pension age getting either £68.10 or £101.75 each week through the benefit.

The Scottish Government recently announced that a new devolved disability payment designed to provide additional financial support for people of State Pension age will not include a mobility component. However, it has also confirmed that the new benefit will not involve any face-to-face assessments as part of the application process.

Attendance Allowance is a benefit delivered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for people of State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision due to an illness, disability or mental health condition. A successful claim for the benefit is worth either £68.10 or £101.75 each week, depending on the level of support someone needs.

There are 22 million people across the UK claiming at least one benefit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). That number includes 12.6 million older people in receipt of State Pension payments, a contributory benefit only available to those of retirement age with at least 10 years’ worth of National Insurance Contributions.

However, it will also affect people in Scotland expecting payments on that date from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). No changes to payments due from Social Security Scotland have been announced and are expected to be made as planned.
