"Not tomorrow, because he is not available," Ten Hag said of Amrabat before the 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton earlier this month. "But what we missed in our squad was behind Casemiro, another one, typical holding midfielder. So with him, we have one.
"You see the overload on games, so we need a type. But also Amrabat can play alongside Casemiro, because he is also capable to play in a higher position on the pitch, also he can play as a wing-back or full-back."
Full-back is not Amrabat's favourite role but the Fiorentina loanee looked as comfortable there as any natural defender, pitting himself against the young and exciting Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. In possession, either he or Diogo Dalot - who was at right-back - would drift into central midfield and had the freedom to push forward.
