helicopter parent is coming in for a landing. Sofia Coppola revealed Wednesday that she was actually amused by her daughter’s TikTok explaining that she had been grounded after trying to charter a private helicopter using her dad’s credit card.“I got lots of compliments on her filmmaking,” Coppola, 52, told the Hollywood Reporter regarding her 16-year-old daughter, Romy Mars.
“And comedy. She’s funny.”The “Lost in Translation” director claimed that since the video was posted, she has had “people discussing my parenting publicly,” adding that it “is not what I would’ve hoped for.“We were raised to be so private, and social media is so the opposite of how I grew up,” continued Coppola.
“So it was the best way for her to be rebellious.”A representative for Coppola declined further comment. In March 2023, Mars shared a viral TikTok explaining that her Oscar- and Grammy-winning parents had grounded her after a failed attempt to charter a chopper from New York to Maryland to visit a friend. “Make a vodka sauce pasta with me because I’m grounded because I tried to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland on my dad’s credit card because I wanted to visit a camp friend,” said Mars in the now-deleted video.According to the teenager, she decided to post the video and defy her parents’ “no public social media” rule since she was already in trouble.
“I thought I would do this since I’m already grounded because my parents’ biggest rule is, like, I’m not allowed to have any public social media accounts. Here’s why,” continued Mars while holding her father’s — Phoenix lead singer Thomas Mars — 2010 Grammy Award.
