Simu shared that it was a junior agent at his management company who convinced him to give the script a chance, after the agent said it was one of the best he’s ever read.
“He literally said this verbatim,” he said. “He was like, ‘If I could stake my career on any one script, it’s the ‘Barbie’ script. I really think you should do it.’”
After his boost of the script, Simu sent in a self-tape audition, which led to an in-person meeting with director Greta Gerwig.
During that meeting, Greta told Simu about “how much she loved watching men dance, because it’s such an expression of artistry you’re not used to seeing from typical men,” and Simu then revealed his dance history with a competitive hip-hop team.
“She audibly guffawed, she giggle-screamed — and then I got the part,” Simu said.
While describing the movie, Simu says it’s “wild” and “incredibly unique”: “I wish I could just show you what we do day-to-day because it’s crazy.”
