A sickening trend of violent online videos have swept through Scotland as attacks on kids are being shared for 'likes and popularity'.
Disturbing footage shared with the Daily Record in the last year shows brutal attacks among youths taking place on school grounds, trains, takeaway shops, shopping centres and on the streets. Officers from Police Scotland say they are constantly advancing technologies and tactics to tackle the issue, but parents have warned the problem is becoming widespread.
Glasgow City Parents Group, a coalition of school parent councils across the city, said the trend has emerged from the desire among teenagers to build an online social status.
Chairperson Leanne McGuire told the Record: "If we look at the way social media works, it's all about trying to come up with content that will get you 'likes' and views. It has become a desire among young people to be seen as the creators of the popular content.
"Whether it is harmful, dangerous or violent, I don't think, for some of, it matters. I think what matters to them is the notoriety that comes with it. To them, it is entertainment and content to share. They're probably not thinking that deeply about it or the consequences that will follow."
It comes after numerous incidents were reported by the Daily Record of violent clips circulating on social media platforms such as TikTok, Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter. In one video, footage shared among pupils at Coltness High, Wishaw, shows a girl being lured onto school grounds before she is ambushed by bullies.
In the footage, the schoolgirl can be seen having objects launched in her direction before she is dragged to the ground, punched and kicked by a group of other girls. Another video reported by the Daily
