The owners of a puppy who contracted a serious bug at a city centre park say vets fighting for his life are running out choices.
Toby the Dachshund has been a patient at a vet hospital for over two weeks after falling sick following a walk in a Belfast park.
After showing signs of improving the pet pooch has taken a turn for the worse today, his first birthday, and now owners Chris Greenlee and Niamh Gilligan have been informed by vets they have “one more throw of the dice”.
Toby started to show signs of sickness 17 days ago, starting with lethargy and vomiting after his usual walk in Ormeau Park.
Since then his condition has deteriorated dramatically despite the best efforts of the three vet teams who have looked after him.
Chris, from Belfast, explained: “We’ve been told this morning that the positive signs we saw a couple days ago were sadly premature.
“We’re are still holding out some hope and the plan for this week was to try and just give him enough time to give him the chance to fight back in the hope of some improvement.
“But today we are slowly running out of options. The vets have changed Toby’s pain medication and are going to try a plasma transfusion on him.
“They have consulted with an external specialist and have warned us that this is basically the last throw of the dice.
“So we are praying the plasma transfusion helps and we’d love everyone to pray with us, send their hopes and thoughts to Toby.
“The most heartbreaking thing about it all, is the fact that today is his first birthday and we’d planned on throwing him a wee birthday party but he’s spending it hooked up to a million different wires and machines.”
