Rose Knight’s identity was finally revealed in tonight’s episode of EastEnders - and she's really Cindy Beale. After months of speculation and fan theories, Cindy returns to EastEnders 25 years after she was killed off-screen. Viewers saw her failing to accept a call from George as he attempted to get in contact with missing wife ‘Rose’ confirming Cindy has been living under both names.
Cindy wasn’t alone in her comeback, her ex-husband, Ian Beale, played by Adam Woodyatt returned too.Thursday's episode will clear-up a lot of unanswered questions including: how long has Ian known Cindy was alive? And where has she been all this time? Actress Michelle Collins, 61, left the show in 1998 when her character went to prison for conspiracy to murder Ian. And shortly after, Ian heard the news Cindy had died while giving birth to Cindy Williams Junior, whose father was Nick Holland. Speaking at a screening of the special episode, Michelle revealed how she and Adam had to keep their returns under wraps.
“We had secret names,” says Michelle. “We were George and Mildred.” explains Adam. “The hardest thing was not being able to tell anyone about it,” adds Michelle.
“I’ve always had it, over 26 years ‘when are you going back? We love Cindy!’. And now it’s like, I am going back, it’s actually happening, but I couldn’t tell anyone.” EastEnders producer Chris Clenshaw had been in talks with Michelle about her return for over a year and used the introduction of the Knights as a way to bring her back. But Michelle was apprehensive about returning to Walford.
