Australian cricketer Shane Warne had just completed a 14-day 'extreme' liquid diet before he died of a suspected heart attack, friends say. The 52-year-old was with pals at the luxury Samujana Villa resort in Koh Samui, Thailand, when he was found unresponsive in his room about 5pm local time on Friday.Thai police earlier confirmed an autopsy found he died of "natural causes" and a full summary will follow.
Warne posted on Instagram six days ago that “operation shred has started”. His manager James Erskine said Warne had taken to drastic measures to trim down, including liquid-only diets.There is no evidence to directly link Warne's diet to his heart attack but Heart Foundation's chief medical advisor Professor Garry Jennings said very low calorie diets can put the heart under extra strain.
"Mostly, these risks are on top of an underlying heart problem, they don't come out of the blue. I doubt they could cause a heart problem just by themselves," Professor Jennings told The Sydney Morning Herald.
"Basically, if your metabolism, your handling of fluids, salt and other electrolytes gets completely out of whack, if you have a small heart attack, you're more likely for that to turn into something serious with a rhythm disorder." In 2018, British scientists published a study using MRI to look at the hearts of 21 obese volunteers who were on very low-calorie diets for eight weeks. While blood pressure and cholesterol fell and insulin resistance improved, heart fat content spiked by 44 per cent in the first week of the diet.The hearts of the volunteers deteriorated, the study found, and were less well able to pump blood.
