A Scots farmer who almost died after being trampled by a cow has issued her heartfelt thanks to the heroes who saved her life. Debbie Duffus suffered multiple crush injuries, internal bleeding and a broken leg after the animal turned on her at the family farm near Tomintoul, Moray, last month.
The 54-year-old had been trying to help a newborn calf when the youngster’s mother took exception to her close proximity and launched the attack. Despite her horror injuries, the mum-of-three managed to crawl back to the farmhouse where she was discovered on the kitchen floor by husband Andy, 57.
Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance arrived at the scene and whisked her to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary just 20 minutes later, which Debbie believes is the reason she’s alive today. Recalling the accident, Debbie told the Record: “The cow acted on instinct because I was going near her baby and I acted on instinct to try and save the calf.
“It’s just one of those things. She tossed me about a few times but I was conscious the whole time. I managed to crawl out of the field on my knees because she’d crushed the bottom of my leg and broke it.
“I just went into survival mode and knew I had to get out so I crawled back into the house. I was in quite a bit of pain because of my leg but I knew there were other problems because she had stood on my ribs as well.
“My husband thankfully came home 10 minutes after it happened. He’s a fireman who does first aid so he knew I was in trouble and called the ambulance. From what he told them, they decided to send the helicopter.
“I’d started getting very sweaty which is a sign of internal bleeding. But I knew I just had to wait for help to arrive so I tried to get as comfortable as possible by lying in the dog’s bed -
