A Scots mountain rescue team member has been left red-faced after they had to be airlifted to hospital following a training mishap. Skye Mountain rescue team had been high up in Coir'an lochain located in the Cuillin mountain range on Sunday, March 26, when the simulated rescue scenario became real.
A team member reportedly had an 'unfortunate accident' with a loose boulder resulting in a lower leg injury and 'much embarrassment'. The casualty was forced to hop and shuffle their way down below Coire a Ghrunndha before additional team members supported by Kintail Mountain Rescue were able to deploy a stretcher.
The injured team member was carried further down the hill to a waiting helicopter before being airlifted to hospital for treatment. The mountain rescue team have warned others to be extra vigilant while traversing lesser-travelled areas of the Cuillin.
In a statement they said: "We pride ourselves on our accurate training scenarios; however, Sunday's training exercise became a bit too real when one of our team members had an unfortunate accident with a loose boulder, high up in Coir'an lochain resulting in a lower leg injury and much embarrassment.
"Loose rock is always something to be extra vigilant about in spring conditions, especially in the lesser-travelled areas of the Cuillin and the weekend’s accident shows that it can happen to anyone, including experienced climbers.
"We wish our team member all the best with their recovery and we can announce he is happy to consider book and film rights in the future."
