A Fire Brigade Union spokeswoman added: “We have just got the word through last week that there have been no bidders for the 999 mobilisation contract which is really bad news.
“There is no doubt that when you combine this with staff shortages and other pressures on the service it could leave lives at risk if something was to go wrong.
“The technicians are openly saying that they are worried that if the old system goes down then it may not come back up online again and that would spell disaster if combined with a major incident.
