Salford Red Devils may move out of of the city to find a ground as the crisis over the lease on their stadium continues. As reported in the Manchester Evening News the future of the club is in jepoardy due to a row over the ownership of its stadium, the club says.
Currently, the city council are 50-50 joint owners of the AJ Bell Stadium, its two training pitches and car park with property giant Peel.
But the future of the stadium, which is home to both Salford Red Devils and Sale Sharks, has been in doubt since co-owners Peel Holdings moved to sell their stake. The council has tabled a plan to buy the property giant's share but opposition councillors are fiercely against the move. Conservative councillors, led by Councillor Robin Garrido, succeeded in getting the plan 'called-in', the process by which major decisions are reviewed.
It has led to a protracted process over the stadium's future. The Super League rugby club said it could fold if the wrangle was not resolved within weeks in a scathing statement about Salford City Council issued six days ago.
The club said in the statement :"We urgently need council officers to act, and to see a conclusion from the council in their negotiations over the lease before it is too late. After endless pontification and procrastination by council officers, we are less than a month away from having no such agreement, and the stark reality now is that without their action in the coming days and weeks, the future of the club is at risk."
Speaking to the BBC, Salford Red Devils managing director Paul King said that the club could move out of Salford even though the A J Bell Stadium was built and opened in 2012 to showcase what was then the only professional sports team in the city.
