Billie Eilish and Finneas Wowed by Bernie Taupin’s Tribute at Variety’s Hitmakers: ‘You’re the F—ing Man, Dawg!’

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music Billie Eilish and her brother and collaborator Finneas O’Connell have received Grammys, an Oscar and just about every award and honor and tribute and kudo young recording artists can imagine in the six years since her debut EP in 2017, but even they can still be awed by a tribute from a respected influence. That happened at Variety’s Hitmakers celebration in Los Angeles on Saturday, when Elton John’s lyricist of 56 years, Bernie Taupin — who has written the lyrics for everything from “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word” to “Bennie and the Jets” and “Candle in the Wind” — paid tribute to their songwriting partnership when rewarding them with the Film Song of the Year honor for “What Was I Made For?,” their song from the summer blockbuster film “Barbie.” Before an audience that included Boygenius, Joan Baez, Olivia Rodrigo, Victoria Monet and many others (SZA hadn’t arrived yet), the following exchange took place: Taupin’s tribute and Eilish’s response (Finneas just said “Thanks guys!”) follows in full.

Sabrina Carpenter Talks Getting Into the ‘Mindset of a Slow Rise’: ‘I Am the Tortoise’

Sabrina Carpenter accepted the Variety Hitmakers Rising Artist Award presented by H&M on Saturday, using the popular fable of “The Tortoise and the Hare” as a metaphor for her rise in the music industry. “Something that my mom always said to me as a little girl that really annoyed me was that I am the tortoise, and if you guys know the tortoise and the hare thing, that pissed me off a lot because, you know, throughout my life, [I was] being told, ‘Sabrina, you’re the tortoise, just chill,’ like ‘it’s okay, you’re the tortoise, just slow down, it’s going to be okay,'” Carpenter said. “In moments of frustration and confusion it can feel like a letdown, but it turns out it’s actually a very good thing.

Victoria Monét Proves Why She’s a Triple Threat: ‘I Feel Like It’s Definitely Uphill Right Now’

Ashley Gorley, Variety’s Songwriter of the Year, on Being Part of Country’s Big Crossover Moment: ‘There’s a Lot More Freedom in This Genre Now’

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Who should be counted as country music’s currently most successful songwriter? You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who could come up with a metric where the end result is not clearly Ashley Gorley, who’s being honored as Songwriter of the Year at Variety‘s annual Hitmakers event. He has been a co-writer on five of the last six Morgan Wallen singles, all of which inevitably topped the country chart — with “Last Night” also going top 5 at pop radio, no small factor in the song spending a near-record 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Sabrina Carpenter on Touring With Taylor Swift, ‘Nonsense’ Success and Scandalizing the Catholic Church: ‘Jesus Was a Carpenter’

Steven J. Horowitz Senior Music Writer Sabrina Carpenter would be the first to admit that “Emails I Can’t Send,” her fifth and most recent album, was like going back to square one. “I saw it as my first big-girl album, for sure,” the 24-year-old says over the phone from Rio de Janeiro, where she’s about to open for Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour.” That growth is the hallmark of “Emails,” which she repackaged as a deluxe version (with the title “Emails I Can’t Send Fwd”) this past March.
