Former captain Roy Keane believes Manchester United must add physicality and a degree of energy to Erik ten Hag's midfield options this summer.
United's midfield has found itself under deep scrutiny over the past 12 months following their failure to bring in a world-class defensive-midfielder last summer. Their midfield was exposed time and time again last season, so it always seemed clear that they would prioritise the addition of a holding-midfielder in this summer's transfer window.
However, United have pinpointed Barcelona ace Frenkie de Jong as their top midfield target, even though he is not considered as an out-and-out defensive-midfielder. Christian Eriksen has already been added to the ranks, but he is, of course, a forward-thinking midfield player.

Although it remains to be seen if United will ever conclude a deal for De Jong, Keane is adamant that his former club needs a physical presence in the centre of midfield.
"Off the top of my head, it's the midfield, the middle of the park, where they need some top quality players in there," Keane told the SkyBet YouTube channel, reflecting on what the Reds need to do address most this summer. "They need some physicality and some energy. That's where I'd start."
Although strengthening the midfield ought to be United's top priority in the eyes of Keane, he also believes several other areas need attention, including the goalkeeping department.
Keane added: "The whole core, the full-backs, the striker and I'm not convinced with the goalkeeper."
