United, who made a disappointing start to their 2022/23 Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon, losing 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford, opened talks with Barcelona almost three months ago in an attempt to secure the Dutchman's signature. He is United's top target to strengthen their midfield options and their need for him was highlighted against the Seagulls.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News at the end of June, United agreed a deal with Barcelona to sign the Netherlands international.
