Engineers are looking into a huge sinkhole that has opened up on a busy Prestwich street. Heywood Road is currently closed in both directions between Bury Old Road and Heys Road.
Wheelie bins were hastily placed in the road to stop drivers heading straight for the sinkhole, which opened up this morning (July 17). Some of the bins fell into the hole as the road continued to cave in, with town hall chiefs believing a collapsed sewer to be the cause.
It's not the first time Heywood Road has been hit by the issue, after a huge sinkhole opened up on the same road in October 2016. More recently, smaller sinkholes have been reported near the junction with Bury Old Road.

Danielle Ayres was driving along Heywood Road after dropping her child off at school earlier today, when she noticed the massive sinkhole ahead of her. "The bins were already out," she said.
"I stopped and got out of my car. There were quite a few people stood around. It stretched from one side of the road to the other, you couldn't even get around it."
Danielle says it wasn't a surprise to see a sinkhole open up on Heywood Road yet again. "I think people have been expecting it," she said.
"That road is terrible anyway - it's a really busy stretch that cuts through Prestwich, it connects quite a few schools. For those of us who use it, it's a really important route."
Eyewitnesses reported seeing cars continue to travel over the sinkhole when it first began to open up and was small in size, before the road collapsed. Buses were seen 'reversing and turning around' to avoid the sinkhole after it opened up this morning.
Work to deal with the sinkhole is now
