Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said claims made against an unnamed BBC presenter will be investigated “swiftly and rigorously”.
Mr Sunak also said he does not know the identity of the BBC presenter who allegedly paid a teenager for explicit images.
The BBC suspended a male member of staff on Sunday after The Sun newspaper reported that he paid a young person around £35,000 over three years, from the age of 17, for explicit images.
Mr Sunak's came ahead of the allegations about the unnamed star being put to the head of the corporation. Speaking to reporters on the plane to the Nato summit in Lithuania, Mr Sunak said: "They were shocking, concerning allegations, of course they were.
“The Culture Secretary (Lucy Frazer) spoke to the director-general, I think it was on Sunday.

“And he has reassured (us) that the process they are undertaking is vigorous and will be swift, so we’ve had those reassurances.”
Asked if he has been told who the BBC presenter in question is, Mr Sunak replied: “No. But I’ve been reassured that the process will be conducted vigorously and swiftly.”
He added that it “is important we now let that carry on”.
BBC Director-General Tim Davie is due to face the media on Tuesday for a scheduled briefing following the release of the corporation’s annual report, although the controversy will dominate the agenda.
The report, planned before the allegations emerged, is an assessment of the BBC’s performance over the last 12 months.
It typically reveals the remuneration of the corporation’s biggest earners, with Mr Davie also expected to answer questions about stars’ pay packets.
