Rishi Sunak's popularity continues to decline as he lags behind Sir Keir Starmer in the polls, according to a recent survey conducted by Ipsos UK. The Prime Minister's net favourability rating has plummeted to minus 21, with 47% of respondents expressing an unfavourable view of him.
These figures mark Sunak's lowest rating since he stepped down as Chancellor of the Exchequer in July 2022, which ultimately led to Boris Johnson's downfall. At that time, Ipsos found that 50% of people held an unfavourable opinion of Sunak.
The poll, conducted between June 30 and July 3, revealed a slight improvement in Sir Keir's ratings over the past month. 32% of respondents stated that they had a favourable view of the Labour leader, while 39% held an unfavourable view.
Unfortunately for Sunak, the Ipsos survey also asked participants about the qualities they seek in a prime minister. The results were overwhelmingly negative for Sunak, while opinions of Sir Keir were more mixed.
When it came to the factors deemed most important by the public, Sunak received predominantly negative ratings. In contrast, perceptions of Sir Keir were more balanced.
Of the 1,000 people polled by Ipsos, half expressed a negative view of Sunak's policies for addressing the cost of living and his understanding of the challenges faced by the British public. Additionally, 42% held a negative view of his competence, 43% doubted his ability to keep promises, and 45% disapproved of his policies for improving public services.
On the other hand, opinions of Sir Keir were evenly split. The public had mixed views on his policies for addressing the cost of living and his understanding of the country's problems. However, they had a net positive impression of his policies
