Rio Ferdinand has jumped to the defence of David de Gea after the Manchester United goalkeeper's mistake in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to West Ham.
De Gea came in for heavy criticism again over the weekend after failing to stop Said Benrahma's weak effort at the London Stadium, with a second straight defeat intensifying the pressure to secure a top-four place. United remain in fourth but are only a point ahead of Liverpool, who have played a game more.
It was not the Spaniard's only major error this season, with a string of poor performances leading to doubts within the club over his future as No.1. But Ferdinand has defended his former Reds teammate in response to a "wild" claim made by FIVE presenter Joel Beya, who insisted Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale will end up enjoying a better Premier League career.
EXCLUSIVE: United have growing doubts over David de Gea's No.1 role
“Wow, wow, WOW! How many Premier Leagues has he (De Gea) won? How many UEFA Cups has he won? Does he have an FA Cup as well?! Probably got a League Cup in there," Ferdinand said. "He has done the clean sweep domestically.
“I think Ramsdale has been tremendous this season. Another one who has come on leaps and bounds. Hasn’t he got two or three relegations under his belt so far?! I’m just asking. You are making big wild statements again! You did it before with [William] Saliba. Too early. Too quick.
“This season he has made mistakes. He has made four mistakes leading to goals. The most in a season with [Hugo] Lloris. That’s not good – but most clean sheets (this season). The geezer has won Player of the Year at Man United, I think it’s five times. What does that tell you?! He has got to be performing and playing tip-top football.”
