One side effect that is particularly frustrating is a throat full of phlegm that can be tough to ignore as talking becomes a tougher task. If you've ever suffered this, one medical expert knows a "simple" trick to dislodge stubborn mucus from the throat and chest in seconds.
Doctor June Reyes took to social media to share his "very effective" technique that her followers were shocked to learn actually works. The good news is that you don't have to buy remedies at the pharmacy to help - you just need a set of lungs and a glass of water.
In a TikTok video that's garnered nearly 80 thousand likes, he explained the relieving process. First, take part in diaphragmatic breathing by inhaling through your nose for five-seconds, feeling your abdomen expand.
After this, hold your breath for five to seven seconds, reports the Mirror. Next - using a glass of water with a straw - exhale slowly and softly through the straw, making bubbles in the water as "this will help create moisture in the throat and help loosen the mucus," said Dr Reyes.
The final step is to perform the huff cough, which involves forcing the breath out of your mouth in one quick burst of air. "Exhale forcefully, but slowly, in a continuous exhalation to move mucus from the smaller to the larger airways," explains Dr Reyes.
The VCU Medical Center suggests keeping the back of your throat open while carrying out the huff cough. Dr Reyes recommends repeating this process around three to five times, until it has cleared.
