Real Housewives Of Cheshire star Nermina Pieters-Mekic was diagnosed with aggressive early stage breast cancer and said her "heart broke" over her worry for her daughter. After being told the news in the summer, the 33-year-old model said she feared she wouldn't see daughter Alaya-Rose, two, grow up.
Adding to her heartbreak was the discovery that she was unable to continue with the pregnancy she'd confirmed just weeks before her diagnosis. “As a mum you just worry about your child,” she said during an exclusive chat with OK!.
“The first thing I thought was, ‘Am I going to see Alaya grow up?’." "One night when I couldn’t sleep I sat in Alaya’s nursery," she continued. "I looked at her height chart on the wall, and thought, ‘What if I’m not here to witness this in a few years? What if I don’t see her grow up?’ They couldn’t do all the checks [cancer tests] because I was pregnant so I kept thinking, ‘I’ll never forgive myself for not seeing Alaya grow up.’" Nermina shares Alaya with her footballer husband Erik, 35, who plays for West Bromwich Albion and has made appearances with the Dutch national team.
The trio now live together with family dog Blue in their stunning home in Wilmslow.
For the last three months Nermina, who joined the Real Housewives in 2017, has been undergoing gruelling rounds of chemotherapy in order to beat the disease. After finding a lump in her left breast this summer, Nermina said doctors initially seemed confident it wasn't cancer.
She recalled taking Alaya to her doctor's appointment because Erik was at a team training session and she felt positive she'd be receiving good news. “Alaya was on my knee and she was trying to cheer me up, and I felt heartbroken for her that she had to be in the room
