Rap Blog is a weekly showcase of a standout rap song. Teenage upstart Myaap isn’t the only female rapper popping out of Milwaukee’s lowend scene (shoutout Lonni Monae), but among Wisconsinite rappers of any gender, she might be having the most fun.
Even the uninitiated are likely familiar with her music, thanks to her knack for going viral on TikTok: breezy jams and loose dance moves, what’s not to love? Read Next: Nedarb is guiding the emo rap scene into maturity Out today, her new EP YOP! is an upbeat collaboration with Canadian producer Nedarb (Black Kray, Lil Peep) that cycles through a deceptive range of sounds despite its flash-in-the-pan runtime. There are still plenty of handclaps on 1 and 3, that key hallmark of lowend music, but the beats here crib from New Orleans bounce (“Fuk It Up”) and Bay Area hyphy (“Turnt Up”) too.
The net result is a brief, bubbly blast of wonderfully low-stakes rap music that puts Milwaukee-style sample flips like “It’s Up” in conversation with regional dance scenes from around the country. I’m partial to the pounding-yet-dainty “Can’t Stop Me” and the deliciously snotty “Turnt Up” (“while you kissing on that n***a he was eating the cooch!”), but the trunk-rattling “MLK” goes dumb.
Nedarb’s beat is smartly minimalist, leaving plenty of cavernous space for Myaap to rap her ass off. Once the handclaps kick in, her flow rushes by like the brakes on her Benz are broken, throwaway flexes, and snippy taunts blurring together like scenery on the highway.

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large I think I can say this on behalf of the entire collective of reporters who cover television: Nothing makes us groan more than when a series star or producer refers to the setting as another “character” in their show. (Actually, I take that back, something else causes even heavier eye rolls: When a performer says their co-stars are “like a family.”) And yet, I may have to temper my cynicism.
There aren’t many places in the UK where you can experience opera inside a cave, see a hotel where Mary Queen of Scots reputedly stayed and drink the freshest mineral water available (although you might want to add an ice cube or two), yet you can do all of this in Buxton. You’d be forgiven if your mind first springs to the bottled water when you think of the town, but there’s so much more to this beautiful town on the edge of the Peak District.

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Next week, on June 7, the entertaining and highly acclaimed geek-goes-undercover-as-contract-killer screwball romantic thriller “Hit Man,” starring It Dude of the moment Glen Powell, drops on Netflix. But this weekend, in case you hadn’t noticed, the movie opened “in theaters.” How many theaters? If you use your hands and feet to count, you’ll have most of them covered. Netflix, the company that did for streaming what McDonald’s did for fast food (made it everyone’s new normal), always likes to make a big show of when it’s playing a movie “in theaters.” It has long amused me to see entertainment journalists get suckered into this public-relations gambit, for the simple reason that so many of them live in New York and L.A., where the tiny number of theaters occasionally playing a Netflix movie tend to be.
