Ramadan 2024 may fall on different dates around the world due to disputes over when the moon will be sighted.
Muslims around the world mark the start of Ramadan when it has been verified that the first crescent moon of the month is sighted. While some countries have special observation councils for this, others rely on their local communities.
Currently, Saudi Arabia's national calendar states the first day of Ramadan will fall on March 11. Many countries follow Saudi Arabia's date including Afghanistan, Denmark, Italy, Japan, and Russia.

Dr Zahid Nawaz, a Midlands-based moonsighting spokesperson, told Birmingham Live about the difficulty of sighting the moon on March 10. He said: "I can predict that this year we are likely to have two dates for Ramadan as some Muslims follow Saudi announcements whilst others rely on actual verified moonsighting in their own or nearby locations.
