Manchester United picked up a valuable Premier League win against Brighton on Tuesday night, defeating the Seagulls by two goals to nil at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils had to work for their first clean sheet in almost a month, especially when Tariq Lamptey was introduced as a substitute on the 60th minute of the contest.
The English wing-back has thrived since making the bold move from Chelsea to Brighton in 2020. Still just 21-year-old, he's lightning quick and his explosiveness often proves to be too much for opposing defenders to handle.
Lamptey is an expert dribbler and despite his portrayal as a 'defender', he's naturally inclined to pose a threat on the attacking side of the game. When his skills are harnessed by Brighton in the final third, he can be very dangerous.
The youngster had such an impact on proceedings at Old Trafford that Ralf Rangnick made a specific change to nullify him. Jadon Sancho started as United's left-sided forward in the match, but he was subbed for Alex Telles - who is a full-back - on the 80th minute.
Telles is more of a natural defender than Sancho. He and Luke Shaw doubled up on Lamptey for the remainder of the clash, as stated by Rangnick in his words after the final whistle.
"Their right side with Lamptey was their dangerous side," said the German coach. "Lamptey played up front - almost like a right winger for 15 minutes - and that's why we decided to bring on Alex Telles to support Luke Shaw on that side."
Although Brighton failed to find the net, Lamptey's effect might have hinted at what Rangnick doesn't have in his squad.
His two right-sided full-back options are Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka at present, with the former stepping up as the first choice after Ole Gunnar
