Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has admitted that it wasn't until recently that he fully understood the size of the club's rivalry with Leeds United.
The German made the admission ahead of this afternoon's showdown at Elland Road, which will see United face Leeds in a Premier League fixture away from home with supporters present for the first time since 2003.
Last season, of course, the two meetings between the two clubs were played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 regulations— meaning Sunday's atmosphere promises to be one to savour for both sets of supporters.
Having thumped Leeds 5-1 at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season back in August, United will be hoping to complete a league double over the Whites and secure a second consecutive win after Tuesday evening's triumph over Brighton.
However, Rangnick has admitted that he did not know the magnitude of the rivalry between the two clubs until last week.
"I didn't know that until a week ago but most of my colleagues have indicated this is probably one of the biggest rivalries in the Premier League," Rangnick said.
"Of course I had those local derbies in Germany, Schalke vs Borussia Dortmund as one example."
When United and Leeds went toe-to-toe back in August, it was the first time that Old Trafford had been packed to the rafters since March 2020 and both sets of supporters did not fail in making an atmosphere.
United, of course, are no strangers to playing in front of big crowds and Rangnick is hopeful that another good atmosphere at Elland Road may play into their hands.
"Our team has a lot of experience playing in that atmosphere and it may raise their performance," continued the German.
