Rachel Maddow To Debut ‘Ultra’ Podcast In First Project Under NBCUniversal-MSNBC Deal

Naman Ramachandran Slice-of-life comedy series “Brown Nation” will have its Indian television premiere on Comedy Central during the Diwali holiday frame. The series will bow on Oct. 22, 2022, with all episodes playing back-to-back. Produced in 2016, the series initially played on Netflix. It follows characters Hasmukh and Dimple from Queens, New York, who attempt to balance their work-life troubles, keep their romance alive all whilst living under the same roof with Papaji, Hasmukh’s father-in-law. It stars Rajeev Varma (“Inside”), Shenaz Treasury (“The Big Sick”), Omi Vaidya (“3 Idiots”) and Melanie Chandra (“Hot Mess Holiday”). The series is directed by Abi Varghese and written by Matt Grubb, George Kanatt, and Varghese.

EXCLUSIVE: IFC Films has picked up worldwide rights to writer and director Nicole Riegel’s sophomore feature and romantic drama Dandelion. A theatrical release is planned for next year.

Cory Gnazzo, who has served as the executive producer of “The Rachel Maddow Show” since 2014 and who has been with the show since its launch in 2008, is taking on a new role as senior executive producer at the network. He will continue to shepherd Maddow’s Monday broadcast on MSNBC and represent her various projects to NBCUniversal. Maddow struck a deal with the media conglomerate in 2021 that calls for the creation of various podcasts, documentaries and more, while keeping her tethered to MSNBC once a week and for special reports.

Marta Balaga Waterside Studios has found its first project in the miniseries “The Last Wish of Sasha Cade.” Created by Jacqueline Pepall, currently at work on “Horrible Histories” for the BBC, it’s based on a novel by Cheyanne Young. Headed by Jeff Norton, who will produce, Waterside Studios is a new creative content venture from Canada’s Corus Entertainment and part of the Nelvana Studios group. The company was launched following an overall deal with Norton’s IP company Dominion of Drama. The bittersweet story – pitched at MIA Market and billed as “All the Bright Places” meets “The Fault in Our Stars” – sees a high school girl trying to come to terms with her best friend’s passing of cancer. But Sasha keeps on revealing her secrets, as Rocki starts to receive letters written before she died. Sasha, who was adopted, had a brother she never knew. Now, she is asking her friend to meet him.

Rachel Maddow is having a hard time wrapping her head around the concept of election deniers who are running in political races this year. On Monday night, the MSNBC host sincerely questioned how those people who deny the 2020 election results expect to be, well, fairly elected.Appearing on “The Tonight Show” and sitting with host Jimmy Fallon, Maddow noted that in new findings from The Washington Post, “a numerical majority of the Republican candidates don’t believe in the last election results.” In fact, many are campaigning on the lie that the election was “stolen” thanks to voter fraud (which has been disproven multiple times since the election ended).“So that’s hard, ’cause if you don’t believe elections are the way we decide who’s in power, how exactly would you like us to choose you?” Maddow said.

The project marks the first independently produced endeavor from Life in Motion Productions, the company founded by Copeland and writer-producer Leyla Fayyaz. “’Flower’ represents the evolution of all my work as a performer, storyteller and activist,” Copeland said in a statement announcing the project. “As someone whose family experienced the instability of not always having a safe place to call home as a child, the issues of homelessness and not having access to basic life needs have always been important to me.”
