Forming a huge part of the country’s history, Great Britain has had a king or queen for more than a thousand years. And with the Queen being our 61st monarch, Her Majesty’s role is full of weird and wonderful traditions from times gone by.
In fact, one of the most notable traditions that has stuck around is that the Queen, who is set to turn 96 later this week, celebrates her birthday twice a year. While Her Majesty celebrates the actual date of her birth on April 21, the monarch also celebrates an official birthday on the second Saturday in June every year.

Speaking exclusively to OK!, the author of The Queen: 70 Chapters in the Life of Elizabeth II, says: “She’s never liked celebrating and was talked into making her 80th and 90th birthdays a public occasion.
“The Queen does these walkabouts reluctantly unlike her mother, whose birthday parties got bigger and bigger every year!” Given that our monarch has spent her life in the spotlight, and an incredible 70 years on the throne, it’s no surprise that she prefers a pared back affair. “The Queen Mother loved to see the crowds screaming for her, but her daughter is determined not to follow that route,” Ian adds.
“If the Queen did follow her mother’s route, her birthday would become bigger too and she’d feel duty bound to make an appearance every year. “She stopped that and made sure only to celebrate the significant birthdays.” While Her Majesty may have always preferred to mark her birthday away from the spotlight, over recent months
