Prince Harry has confessed that he 'wanted to be someone new' as he crafted a fresh persona away from the Royal Family.
The Duke of Sussex has candidly discussed his struggle with identity while growing up in the world's most renowned family. Prince Harry stepped down as a senior member of the Royal family in 2020, but his identity crisis began much earlier.
He recounted acquiring a new identity during a gap year in Australia in 2003, where he worked as a jackaroo (also known as a cowboy) at Tooloombilla Station. In his book Spare, Prince Harry revealed how he earned the nickname 'Spike'.
He shared that his shock of ginger hair 'never recovered' after he let his Eton friends shave his head back at school - and it started growing back in strands that 'shot up like summer grass. ' This was when his new identity emerged, reports the Mirror.
Harry even altered his accent to match his new persona. He remembered how even his 'Pa' enjoyed his new nickname, as did his security who had t-shirts made featuring his new moniker, reading 'Spike 2003.'
The father-of-two, Prince Harry, opens up in his memoir Spare about the myriad of nicknames he's been given over time: "Soon enough my mates at home got wind of this new nickname, and adopted it. I became Spike, when I wasn't Haz, or Baz, or Prince Jackaroo, or Harold, or Darling Boy, or Scrawny, a nickname given me by some Palace staff. Identity had always been problematic, but with a half dozen formal names and a full dozen nicknames it was turning into a hall of mirrors."
