Prince Harry has been cruelly trolled over wearing his Army and Royal Family medals in an appearance at a US soldier award ceremony. Harry, 39, made a speech that he filmed outside his home in Montecito, California, to honour US combat medic Sergeant First Class Elizabeth Marks as the winner of the Military Times' Soldier of the Year award.
But those who saw the speech included some who trolled him over his decision to wear his medals - one for serving in the British Army and the others related to royal duties. Harry, who moved to California with wife Meghan Markle in 2020, has stepped down as a senior Royal and has made a number of TV appearances and documentaries criticising members of his family in recent years.
Some of those who saw him wearing the medals - which included an Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan presented in 2008 after his service in Helmand Province, his Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, his Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, and his Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal - were offended by the move. One person wrote on Reddit: "Out of everyone in the world they chose Harry?!" while another added: "We didn't have an American Veteran who could do this?" However, others pointed out that Harry had met Soldier of the Year Sergeant Banks at the Invictus Games in 2016 and called it "special" that he was the one to make the speech about her.
Another person appeared to stick up for him, writing: "Harry is wearing his participation medals. 3 of them are to mark the late Queen's jubilees, and one is for being in the Army." Sergeant Banks joined the US Army in 2008 at the age of 17 but suffered hip injuries while deployed in Iraq two years later.
