A police watchdog has been ordered to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a missing man in the Highlands.
Donald Alexander Baxter McPhee was missing for five days before he was found dead in Fort William on March 8. The 30-year-old was reported missing to Police Scotland, with his last known sighting at 4.45pm on March 3 on Lundavra Road.
At the time, officers were treating his death as unexplained. Now, the Crown has ordered the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) to investigate the circumstances in the lead-up to Mr McPhee's death.
A Pirc spokesperson said: "We have been directed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to investigate the circumstances in the lead-up to the death of a 30-year-old man in Fort William whose body was found on 8 March, 2024.
"Once the investigation is concluded, a report on our findings will be submitted to the COPFS."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The circumstances have now been referred by Police Scotland to the Police Investigation and Review Commissioner. It would therefore be inappropriate to comment further."
The Record has approached COPFS for comment.
