When new DC Co-Chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran took their new posts last fall, there was a lot of agita in town with their swift decisions.
So, James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over the DC Universe with DC Studios. So far, that’s meant Henry Cavill out as Superman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman fate is unclear (though director Patty Jenkins threequel was rejected), Jason Momoa with vague but good news about his future, and everyone else with a big fat TBD.
As James Gunn and Peter Safran build a new path forward for DC Studios, they leave lots of upheaval in their wake. Patty Jenkins‘ “Wonder Woman 3“? No more. Henry Cavill? No longer Superman. A sequel to “Black Adam“? Not gonna happen, and Dwayne Johnson‘s tenure as the superhero is likely over, too.
Dwayne Johnson has taken to social to make it official that he’s heard from DC Studios co-head James Gunn and Black Adam won’t be a part of the first phase of DC’s new plans. “However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.”
James Gunn and Peter Safran have been tasked to shake up the DC Universe and in doing so have scrapped several ideas from the past regime like Henry Cavill’s return as Superman and Patty Jenkins’ take on 3.
DC studios co-CEO James Gunn has long engaged with fans on Twitter, both as director of movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy and in his new executive capacity at Warner Bros. Discovery. But some of his recent replies have taken a sharper tone since fans began reacting to the news that Patty Jenkins’ plan for Wonder Woman 3 was not moving forward and, more stridently, the revelation that Henry Cavill would not be returning as Superman.
Unless you’ve been living under the proverbial rock, you’ve probably heard that there is drama in the DC film universe. But, of course, when is there not? Recently, it was announced that James Gunn is writing a new “Superman” film, which would focus on the character’s earlier days.
What the hell is going on over at DC Studios? That’s the question on superhero film fans’ minds, as we see the beginning stages of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reign over the DCU. That question has been amplified by the recent news that Patty Jenkins is no longer making “Wonder Woman 3” and apparently, there is a not-so-small chance that the entirety of the DCU could be facing a reboot.
If you’ve heard some of the rumors swirling, some of them gossipy and nasty, everything from Patty Jenkins walking away from “Wonder Woman 3,” refusing to make changes to her treatment, and being difficult to work with, well know that the filmmaker has heard them herself and isn’t happy. Jenkins took to social media this evening to refute some of the claims swirling around about her, some from the Wrap and others from Jeff Sneider’s YouTube Show that really painted her in a hostile, hard-to-work-with light.
Patty Jenkins is clearing up what happened with Wonder Woman 3 and her return to Rogue Squadron.
It’s been a deeply turbulent week for DC fans of late. After news broke of some potentially drastic changes—a potential reboot of the entire Universe, which could include recasting of major characters—all kinds of details and ramifications started surfacing, including the news that Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 3” treatment was nixed by the studio, effectively killing her proposed version of that film (and it sounds like she’s walked away from the franchise entirely, upset that her pitch was rejected).
Yesterday’s DC chaos about the unplugging of Patty Jenkins’ version of Wonder Woman 3 coupled with rampant rumors of the studio’s new co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran turning the comic book label upside down sans a Henry Cavill Man of Steel 2 and possible re-casting of many current big superhero roles has left the town with a bad case of PTSD.
DC Studios co-head James Gunn took to Twitter to respond to the chaotic news that broke yesterday about Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 not moving forward and other DC changes. You can see the tweets below.
Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter broke a lot of news about the DCU‘s future, with multiple bombshells in the mix about a drastic full reset for the franchise. The biggest one? Patty Jenkins‘ “Wonder Woman 3” is dead, and it’s possible “Man Of Steel 2” may get the ax, too.
DC Fans got a lot of shocking news yesterday about the DCEU‘s future. In short, there may be a massive, drastic reset for the brand on the horizon, with some upcoming films now scrapped. Patty Jenkins‘ “Wonder Woman 3“? Dead.
Earlier this week, Gal Gadot teased a “Wonder Woman” update on Twitter and an announcement. Fans thought it to mean good news, probably word about Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 3,” and possibly an update, release date, or word that the project was officially moving forward.
In the first big bold move by the new heads of DC, James Gunn and Peter Safran, Deadline has confirmed that they’ve put the kibosh on Patty Jenkins’ treatment of Wonder Woman 3. The filmmaker was expected to hand in a screenplay we understand, and instead the new bosses got pieces of paper which just weren’t suitable.

Harper’s Bazaar that investors kept pushing for a NSFW LGBTQ story, instead of a plot about a killer on the run.She told the publication how backers demanded “a hot lesbian movie with me and Christina Ricci” — however, that is not what the Patty Jenkins-directed “Monster” turned out to be.“There’s a natural fight in me to want to create environments that feel like the things that I wish I had 30 years ago when I started,” Theron said. The “Old Guard” actress also discussed her struggles with costumes during movie shoots.“Having absolutely no control over what you’re wearing is a big one that really f – – king annoyed me for years. Having some guy make you have a fitting almost in front of them — stuff like that, it’s really belittling,” Theron noted. She then described an incident on set involving a director who kept wanting her to change her clothes.“When I started, there was no conversation around it.
Zack Sharf Charlize Theron revealed to Harper’s Bazaar a “belittling” experience from her early days as an actor, in which an unnamed male director made repeated attempts to have her look more “fuckable” on set. The “Monster” Oscar winner said one of her biggest pet peeves when she was just starting out as a professional actor was men controlling what she wore on screen. “Having absolutely no control over what you’re wearing is a big one that really fucking annoyed me for years,” Theron said. “Having some guy make you have a fitting almost in front of them—stuff like that, it’s really belittling. according to the Wrap.“Rouge Squadron” had previously been delayed due to scheduling conflicts with Jenkins. The film was announced back in December of 2020 by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, during Disney Investor Day.“Rogue Squadron” was set to “introduce a new generation of ‘Star Wars’ pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing high-speed thrill ride,” according to Kennedy.
Twitter that she was inspired to tackle what will be “the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time” because of her own experience as the daughter of a military fighter pilot.
Disney has stamped release dates on some of its biggest announcements from out of its D23 convention, most notably shifting “Haunted Mansion” from the spring of next year to now open in a prime summer 2023 slot on August 11, 2023, while also dating “Mufasa: The Lion King” for July 5, 2024. Other dates were Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” for April 21, 2023, Pixar’s “Elio” for March 1, 2024 and “Disney’s Snow White” for March 22, 2024.
Disney has summarized a bulk of release dates that had made know over the weekend out of D23. What’s important to note that’s new here is that the Star Wars movie which Patty Jenkins couldn’t commit to, Rogue Squadron, is removed off its Dec. 22, 2023 release date — not shocking. TBD if that film is still in development.
Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Disney has removed “Rogue Squadron,” the new “Star Wars” film from director Patty Jenkins, from its release calendar. The move comes as little surprise since the tentpole, which was scheduled for Dec. 22, 2023, was taken off the studio’s production schedule in 2021. The announcement is more-or-less pro forma, as the window for “Rogue Squadron” to start filming in time to complete the movie by next December had very nearly closed. The next big-screen story in the space opera saga had already been delayed in November 2021, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts with Jenkins. As part of the scheduling change, Disney set release dates for several movies, including its “Snow White” remake, starring Rachel Zegler (March 22, 2024); “Inside Out 2,” a follow-up to the emotional Pixar picture (June 14, 2024); and “The Lion King” sequel “Mufasa,” from director Barry Jenkins (July 5, 2024).
