Patty Jenkins Says She “Never Walked Away” From ‘Wonder Woman 3’ & Gives Update On ‘Rogue Squadron’

As James Gunn and Peter Safran build a new path forward for DC Studios, they leave lots of upheaval in their wake.  Patty Jenkins‘ “Wonder Woman 3“? No more.  Henry Cavill? No longer Superman. A sequel to “Black Adam“? Not gonna happen, and Dwayne Johnson‘s tenure as the superhero is likely over, too.

Dwayne Johnson has taken to social to make it official that he’s heard from DC Studios co-head James Gunn and Black Adam won’t be a part of the first phase of DC’s new plans. “However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran have been tasked to shake up the DC Universe and in doing so have scrapped several ideas from the past regime like Henry Cavill’s return as Superman and Patty Jenkins’ take on 3.

DC studios co-CEO James Gunn has long engaged with fans on Twitter, both as director of movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy and in his new executive capacity at Warner Bros. Discovery. But some of his recent replies have taken a sharper tone since fans began reacting to the news that Patty Jenkins’ plan for Wonder Woman 3 was not moving forward and, more stridently, the revelation that Henry Cavill would not be returning as Superman.

Unless you’ve been living under the proverbial rock, you’ve probably heard that there is drama in the DC film universe. But, of course, when is there not? Recently, it was announced that James Gunn is writing a new “Superman” film, which would focus on the character’s earlier days.

It’s been nearly five decades since the publication of Octavia E. Butler’s critically acclaimed Black sci-fi novel Kindred. In an interview with Publisher’s Weekly, Butler explained that she wanted to write a thought-provoking novel “that would make others feel the history: the pain and fear that Black people have had to live through in order to endure.” The themes of racial injustice, systematic oppression and trauma are, unfortunately, still an evergreen topic, but one that has always seemed primed for its own film or television series. We can see from the recent award-winning releases of HBO’s Lovecraft Country and Watchmen (2019) or writer-director Jordan Peele’s trilogy of films Get Out, Us and Nope that there’s an audience for adapting works that challenge, contextualize or expand the notions behind the complicated history of slavery and Black trauma in America.

What the hell is going on over at DC Studios? That’s the question on superhero film fans’ minds, as we see the beginning stages of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reign over the DCU. That question has been amplified by the recent news that Patty Jenkins is no longer making “Wonder Woman 3” and apparently, there is a not-so-small chance that the entirety of the DCU could be facing a reboot.

Jenkins took to social media this evening to refute some of the claims swirling around about her, some from the Wrap and others from Jeff Sneider’s YouTube Show that really painted her in a hostile, hard-to-work-with light.
