Ava DuVernay’s past experiences with the Venice Film Festival have been more exclusionary than esteemed, revealed the director during a press conference for her new film “Origin” on Wednesday.

In Ava DuVernay’s 7th feature, Origin, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival tonight, the exploration of caste systems as a mode of oppression takes center stage. Written by DuVernay and Isabel Wilkerson, the film is adapted from the latter’s book, Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents. The narrative delves into the deep-seeded intricacies of caste and how it underpins much of society’s discrimination, sometimes transcending even race. The film stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, and includes performances by Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood and Connie Nielsen.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Neon has acquired worldwide rights to Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” ahead of its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival. The movie, starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, will also screen at the Toronto International Film Festival. “Origin” will be released in theaters later this year.

Filming on Daredevil revival Daredevil: Born Again has been on hold for the time being due to the Hollywood strikes, and there’s no word about a Jessica Jones reboot happening anytime soon, but the shows’ three stars, Vincent D’Onofrio, Charlie Cox and Krysten Ritter, reunited at GalaxyCon Austin over the weekend and posed for a very fun photo. Ava DuVernay’s Origin, the first film by an African American woman to play in Competition at the Venice Film Festival, will have a Gala screening at Roy Thomson Hall at TIFF on Monday, September 11. Despite its disputes being more than seven years old, David Ayer’s 2016 superhero film, “Suicide Squad,” continues to be a source of controversy for dejected fans online and a point of contention for the filmmaker. Jordan Moreau Ray Stevenson, the Irish actor who starred in films like “Punisher: War Zone,” “King Arthur,” the “Thor” films and the upcoming “Ahsoka” series,” died on Sunday, Variety has confirmed with his publicist. He was 58. No information or cause of death was available. Stevenson began his career appearing on TV shows in the 1990s then began landing action roles in Hollywood films starting in the 2000s. His first major film role cam in Antoine Fuqua’s 2004’s adventure movie “King Arthur,” where he played Dagonet, one of the Knights of the Round Table. In the film, his character sacrifices himself in battle to help Arthur (Clive Owen) and his brotherhood of warriors.
