‘The Walking Dead’ Finally Gets Its Emmy Moment — Sorta — and Other Trivia From 2023’s Nominations

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Remember AMC’s “The Walking Dead”? You know, the biggest series on TV at one time. Most-watched basic cable show in history, and I can guarantee that will never be topped. But yet, an Emmy dud. The series (which will live on via a frenzy of spin-offs) ended its run last November after 11 seasons… and it’s still ignored by TV Academy voters, failing to pick up a single nomination on Wednesday. And yet… this may have been the most successful year at the Emmys ever for “The Walking Dead.” That’s because two of the franchise’s most beloved actors, Steven Yeun and Jon Bernthal, picked up their first-ever Emmy nominations. Granted, it’s not for “The Walking Dead” — Yeun is nominated in lead limited/anthology actor for “Beef” and Bernthal is a comedy guest actor nominee for “The Bear” (which is about… Chicago’s “Beef” restaurant) — but at least it’s a belated victory for two actors that made a name for themselves by fighting zombies.

Jamie Lee Curtis and More SAG Members React to Strike and Get Ready to Fight: It’s Time to ‘Pick Up the Signs’

Charna Flam With the news that SAG-AFTRA will now go on strike, members of the acting guild have taken to social media to express their support for the union and to commit to the fight. SAG-AFTRA members are joining the Writers Guild of America in striking for fair compensation, making it a “double strike,” which hasn’t happened since 1960. The WGA has been on strike since May 2. Jamie Lee Curtis took to Instagram and championed the strike by posting a photo of the comedy and tragedy masks. “It looks like it’s time to take down the MASKS. And pick up the SIGNS,” she wrote in the caption. Curtis’ post comes after SAG members awarded her the supporting actress prize for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at the SAG Awards earlier this year. She has Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” set for release in August, but she will not be allowed to promote the film during the strike.

‘The Bear’: The 10 best celeb cameos from TV’s most stressful comedy

hit half-hour comedy “The Bear” picked up a whopping 13 2023 Emmy nominations in today’s big reveal — but in Hollywood’s eyes, the show, now in its second season, is already a winner, with A-listers calling their agents to secure them a quick cameo. The story revolves around talented-but-damaged chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), who moves home to Chicago after a three-Michelin-star stint, getting back to basics at the family’s Italian beef joint. “The Bear” received a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series, pitting it against big-hitters like Max’s “Barry” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.”Featuring top-notch performances from the likes of White (“Shameless”), Ayo Edebiri (“Big Mouth”) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“Girls”) — all of whom received Emmy nominations for their work in Season 1 — an additional highlight has been guessing which famous actors will pop up next, anywhere from a few moments to multiple episodes.

‘The Bear’ Culinary Producer Courtney Storer on How Her Restaurant Burnout Impacts the Story: ‘It Feels Like Art Therapy’

Selome Hailu “The Bear” became an overnight sensation when its first season debuted in 2022 because of its visceral honesty about how it looks and feels to work in a restaurant. Much of the credit for that belongs to Courtney Storer. Storer, sister of series creator Chris Storer, has worked in high-profile kitchens from Verjus in Paris to Jon & Vinny’s in L.A., but her most recent job has been to serve as “The Bear’s” culinary producer, getting the writers, cast and crew acclimated to the world the series takes place in. “In Season 1, it was it was a lot of storytelling with the writers, but also providing my journals and different training guides to give insight into the ethos of restaurants,” Storer says. “It’s bigger than the conflicts: It’s the decision-making, the structure, the procedures, the recipes.”

‘The Bear’: How Ramy Youssef and Lionel Boyce Crafted Marcus’ Copenhagen Adventure

Selome Hailu Though production on Season 2 of “The Bear” was well underway before Ramy Youssef traveled to Copenhagen to direct the fourth episode, series creator Chris Storer was slow to bring him fully behind the curtain. “He didn’t let me watch anything they had shot [in the first three episodes]. He was like, ‘No, no. You can see it when you come back, but just make this what you think it should be,'” Youssef remembers. Youssef is the first and only person to serve as a director on “The Bear” besides Storer and his co-showrunner Joanna Calo. When a tight production timeline made it impossible for Storer or Calo to direct in Copenhagen on top of nine Chicago-set episodes, Youssef was Storer’s first choice. Storer has been a director and executive producer on Youssef’s Hulu series “Ramy” since its 2019 debut, and had bounced ideas for “The Bear” off of him since “way back when it was a movie idea.”
