And he hasn’t been scared to open up about his negative experiences making those films, along with how they have affected his career moving forward.

John Boyega has made peace with the role that previously caused him anguish that he made public, but now says “made a man of him.” 

John Boyega will star in the next film from “Dead Pigs” and “Birds of Prey” director Cathy Yan. The sci-fi romance “The Freshening” comes from FilmNation Entertainment with Ali Wong producing alongside Hyperobject Industries’ Adam McKay and Betsy Koch and Rewild’s Yan and Ash SarohiaThe picture, set to film later this year, is inspired by Rachel Khong’s short story in the Paris Review, which was set in the near future during which tensions over race and gender have reached a violent boiling point.

It’s been a few years since we’ve seen Cathy Yan debut a film project. Back at the beginning of 2020, shortly before COVID took over and shut everything down, Yan’s “Birds of Prey” was released in theaters.

The “Luther” actor was immediately accused of renouncing his Blackness, although actors such as John Boyega came to his defense and argued that critics weren’t paying attention to his message about damning Hollywood stereotyping. “I feel as I get older – I’m 50 now – we all have fears of saying too much, oversharing and whatno,” Elba now told The Guardian in a new interview. “And in this day and age, it’s really difficult to have an opinion if you’re in the public eye because it gets overly scrutinized, taken out of context, thrown into some sort of bullshit, zeitgeisty social media argument.”

We continuously focus on what we have to do so they don’t do this or that. Very worrying. We BLACK and that’s that.”

John Boyega has responded to Idris Elba‘s recent comments, where the latter said he had “stopped describing [himself] as a Black actor”.During a recent chat with Esquire UK, the Luther star said people are “obsessed with race”, and that “can really hinder people’s aspirations,” adding that being described as a Black actor “put [him] in a box”.“If we spent half the time not talking about the differences but the similarities between us, the entire planet would have a shift in the way we deal with each other,” the star began.“As humans, we are obsessed with race. And that obsession can really hinder people’s aspirations, hinder people’s growth.”Elba added: “Racism should be a topic for discussion, sure. Racism is very real.

Joe Cornish’s teen ghosthunter drama Lockwood and Co. launches on Netflix globally today. The show, the streamer’s latest young-adult scripted series from the UK, stars Ruby Stokes (Bridgerton) and newcomers Cameron Chapman and Ali Hadji-Heshmati as a teen trio who run an independent ghost fighting agency in London while competing with adult-run corporate rivals.

When Chadwick Boseman passed away a couple of years ago, there were folks talking about possible replacements for the actor in the role of T’Challa in the “Black Panther” franchise. A name that was brought up for that role, and really any sort of Wakandan role, was John Boyega.

Back in 2020, it was revealed that filmmaker Joe Cornish was starting to feel out if John Boyega would be into the idea of making a sequel to “Attack the Block.” A little more than a year later, it was confirmed that “Attack the Block 2” is happening with Boyega leading the cast.

John Boyega is one of a diminishing number of Hollywood film stars that hasn’t yet dived properly into the world of high-end TV drama. The 30-year-old actor has made several appearances on television—most notably winning plaudits for his searing portrait of a London policeman in Steve McQueen’s multi-award-winning BBC/Prime Video anthology Small Axe—but his career has largely been defined by roles in movies like Attack the Block and the third Star Wars trilogy.

Academy Award winner Viola Davis (“Fences”) will be the sole actress campaigning for lead actress.  Mbedu, who was the breakout sensation of 2021’s Emmy-nominated series “The Underground Railroad” from director Barry Jenkins, will compete in supporting alongside her co-stars Sheila Atim, Jayme Lawson, Adrienne Warren and most prominent, Lashana Lynch. All of the male actors, including John Boyega, will be competing in supporting actor.

There's something funky going down, and only three people are capable of handling the investigation -- John Boyega, Teyonah Parris and Jamie Foxx. Netflix dropped the first teaser for its upcoming mystery film, featuring the threesome as an unlikely trio thrust onto the trail of a nefarious government experiment. Foxx introduced fans to the first look at the caper during Netflix's Tudum fan event on Saturday, and as expected, it was worth the wait!The footage begins with the three friends in an elevator, slowly descending to the basement floor.

Oscar-winning actor Jaime Foxx (“Miami Vice,” “Ray“) has been working on a regular basis with Netflix on action pics like “Project Power” and the recent vampire action-comedy “Day Shift.” Foxx will continue that genre run at the streaming giant with the science fiction comedy “They Cloned Tyrone” which co-stars familiar faces with John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens“) and Teyonah Parris (“The Marvels,” “Wandavision“) taking main roles.

The 30-year-old staple appeared on Thursday's and was asked by fans who was cooler on the set of — Prince William or Prince Harry. «I definitely think it was Harry. Harry is just more casual, isn't he?» Boyega said of the 38-year-old Duke of Sussex. The royal brothers visited the set in 2016 and even filmed a cameo as Storm Troopers, which was eventually cut from the final film. «I don't know why. Maybe the royal family were like, 'Nah, leave them out of the universe,'» Boyega speculated of the cut footage. «But we never would have known,» host Cohen argued. «There's something about royalty,» Boyega joked in an affected posh accent.

The Woman King” star Thuso Mbedu isn’t ruling out a potential sequel for the Sony film, which premiered on Sept. 16. Though Mbedu said director Gina Prince-Bythewood has made it known she doesn’t “believe” in sequels, her co-star John Boyega had an idea that may be too good to pass up. “I texted Gina the other day about it,” Mbedu told Variety at the Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program cocktail celebration on Thursday night, for which she was serving as a juror. “Gina said she doesn’t believe in sequels, but John had a nice idea for the sequel… I told it to Gina and she was like, ‘Ah, actually that could work,’ and then started bouncing ideas and I’m like, ‘Gina, go to sleep!’ And she was like, ‘No my mind is ticking already.’ So, we don’t know. Only Sony will tell us.”

Headstrong new recruit Nawi (Mbedu) and her peers Fumbe (Masali Baduza) and Ode (Adrienne Warren) challenge their elder superiors with new battle tactics, thoughts and principles. So is “The Woman King” a true story? The short answer is yes, the film derives from real historical events and accounts, but only so much reliable source material was available.

“The Woman King,” the historical action epic starring Viola Davis, took in $1.7 million at the box office from its Thursday night preview screenings, which opened at 3 p.m. on 3,271 screens. The Sony and eOne film will launch at 3,765 locations this weekend.In its opening weekend, the studio projects “The Woman King” to earn $12 million against a $50 million budget.

The historical epic is aiming for a $15 million opening this weekend, where it doesn’t face much competition from rival releases. Other projections see a launch as high as $18 million to $20 million, or as low as $12 million. “The Woman King” comes with a $50 million price tag, so results on the lower end would be less than royal for Sony. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Old Guard,” “Love & Basketball”), the movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, where it had a warm reception from attendees. Set in the 1820s, the film stars Davis as a powerful general of the Agojie, an all-female military regiment that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey. The cast includes John Boyega, Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu and Sheila Atim.

John Boyega lost friends after he made an emotional speech backing the Black Lives Matter campaign two years ago. The actor, a proud and vocal activist on issues affecting Black people and communities, spoke during a 2020 protest in London's Hyde Park after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in America. During his rallying cry, he implored listeners to remember those who had died from police brutality, urged Black men to take care of Black women and even commented, "Look, I don't know if I'm going to have a career after this, but f**k that.

Her achievement in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s resounding epic “The Woman King,” along with the sensational ensemble, is among the highlights of the Toronto Film Festival when it premiered on Friday night. It feels like the “Gladiator” for Black women and what a welcomed surprise. With the right messaging and awards campaign from Sony Pictures, the film can be among the many consumer-friendly titles in the hunt for Oscar attention.

When fans complain about the inclusion of women of color in action franchises, they often fall back on the same talking points: it’s not about sexism, it’s just that filmmakers should create different, original movies for Black and Brown actors. Gina Prince Bythewood has done just that with “The Woman King” and proven what we already knew: that women always have and always will make formidable action heroes.

Usually the best said is saved for last at a TIFF premiere, meaning the biggest speeches come during a pic’s Q & A. However, The Woman King star and producer Viola Davis brought the house down with a passionate speech about her “magnum opus” film, and how she hopes it inspires generations of Black women.
