London’s Leicester Square. Lead actress Viola Davis beamed with pride for her latest project as she posed on the red carpet alongside co-stars Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, and more. The Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed movie is set in the 1800s and tells the story of a group of all-female warriors who aim to protect the African kingdom of Dahomey with skills and fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen.
When faced with a new threat, Nanisca (Viola) must train the next generation of recruits to fight against a foreign enemy. The basic framework of the film is inspired by true events, but the plot is heavily fictionalised, as the female warrior group did actually exist, but the events in the film are largely dramatised. Celebrating The Woman King’s release on October 4, Emmy-winning actress Viola was joined by her husband of 19 years, Julius Tennon.
Viola, 57, looked stunning in a black and white striped gown with floral detailing and sleeveless design. She styled her raven locks into a glamorous Hollywood-style bun while her fringe flowed down, adding an extra touch of glamour with a smokey eye and glossy nude lip. The How To Get Away With Murder star smiled with her arm around her actor husband, who looked dapper in a grey suit.
Meanwhile, Lashana, who plays Izogie in the flick, oozed opulence in a gold Jenny Peckham dress. Covered in jewels and sequins, the gown, with a scooped neckline and matching poncho, a real show-stopper. The actress, also known for playing Rosaline Capulet in ABC period drama series Still Star-Crossed, only added to her dazzling display with a glitzy statement necklace, and shimmery make-up.
