Pep Guardiola said that Manchester United’s struggles since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson serve as a warning to Manchester City. The Reds have failed to win the Premier League in the eight years since their most successful manager retired, and are trailing in the wake of the Blues.
That was underlined as City ran riot in the second half to chalk up a 4-1 win in the derby, opening a six-point lead over Liverpool at the top of the table and dumping the Reds out of the top four. Ferguson’s retirement was followed three years later by Guardiola’s transformation of City from contenders and occasional title winners into serial champions.
But Guardiola said that the fact the Reds have suffered in recent years is a warning to City themselves not to get complacent. “The club (City) is so stable of what they want to do, the way they want to play but the example we have to live is that United could not expect one decade ago the years of living without Premier Leagues,” he said. “We have to learn. It could happen here too.

“Believe we are so good that it is not going to happen here what happened to United, it can happen, so quickly. I remember Milan winning Champions Leagues under (Arrigo) Sacchi and (Fabio) Capello then years without playing in Europe. When I was a teenager, Arrigo Sacchi was the team all around the world we admire, and then this is what we have to avoid.”
