Scots are being urged not to miss out on £150 worth of help for their energy bills ahead of the reopening of a scheme delivered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The Warm Home Discount Scheme for winter 2023/24 opens nationwide on Monday, October 16, and certain pensioners should automatically have the rebate applied directly to their electricity bill.
However, unlike in England and Wales, many low-income families in Scotland will need to apply, following rule changes introduced last year, as payments are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Advice Direct Scotland, the national energy advice service for Scotland, is encouraging eligible individuals to check with their suppliers to ensure they receive the additional financial support this winter.
People in Scotland may be able to claim before October 16 as some energy firms have already opened for new applications. Members of the Daily Record Money Saving Scotland Facebook group have been posting regular updates on this and so far Octopus, British Gas, EDF and So Energy are accepting applications.
The charity is urging households to apply as soon as possible, as energy companies have a limited pot of cash to distribute, and they should check with them even if they were eligible for a discount last year.
The Warm Home Discount Scheme is designed to help those on low incomes and who live in older, colder homes, such as those with poor insulation.
Older people in receipt of the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit should automatically receive a letter informing them about the discount, with the rebate applied to energy bills between October and March. Those on a prepay meter usually receive a top-up voucher.
