Paul Scholes believes Lisandro Martinez will be a 'huge miss' after the Manchester United defender was carried off the pitch in a concerning moment against Sevilla.
Martinez went down under no pressure in the 86th minute of United's 2-2 draw with Sevilla after turning on the ball, holding the back of his ankle and in obvious pain. The Reds defender was carried off the pitch by Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel, his two Argentinian compatriots from the visiting side, before being taken down the tunnel on a stretcher.
The concern of his injury was compounded in a chaotic eight-minute spell for United, who blew a two-goal lead and what looked to be certain victory due to two own-goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire, meaning United now go into the second leg level despite dominating.
RATINGS: Martial and Sabitzer good in Sevilla draw
"He will be a huge miss," Scholes told BT Sport of Martinez. "He’s shown real character and leadership skills, a strength, a solidness to that back four along with Varane as well. I think it probably makes it a 50:50 game next week."
Raphael Varane was also forced off at half-time after going down with an injury, the Frenchman replaced by Harry Maguire. It means Erik ten Hag may be without both of his first-choice centre-back pairing for next week's second leg, something that concerns Scholes.
"Lindelof and Maguire, that worries me slightly just because they haven’t played games. I think they’ll get through it, I think they’ll be fine, centre half is a position where you can tend to get through it."
Erik ten Hag admitted after the result that Martinez's injury doesn't look good but said he hadn't properly spoken to either him or Varane. Both will likely be further assessed in the coming
