Parts of the Trafford Palazzo were evacuated this afternoon following reports of smoke and a burning smell coming from an escalator.
Shoppers were told to leave the complex, formerly known as Barton Square, just after 5pm today (Saturday July 23). Fire engines from Stretford, Salford and Eccles rushed to the scene and made the area safe.
Maintenance staff were left to work on the escalator and the building reopened around an hour later. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Just after 5pm on Saturday 23 July, fire crews were called to Trafford Palazzo after receiving reports of smoke and a burning smell coming from an escalator.
“Three fire engines from Stretford, Salford and Eccles fire stations quickly attended the incident. Firefighters helped ensure the area was safe before handing over to the escalator maintenance company and Trafford Palazzo staff.”
