Outlander's Sam Heughan admits filming for season 7 'won't be finished until next year'

Outlander star Sam Heughan has given the show's fans some news that might be a little disappointing. The Scottish actor is back in Scotland filming the bumper season seven with his fellow cast and crew.
However, he recently admitted that it might be a while before we finally get to see the end of Droughtlander and the new season finally hits our screens. Though they've been making some great progress since filming began in the spring, Sam stated he reckons they could be filming well into next year.
Speaking to Esquire magazine, the 42-year-old confirmed that though it only feels like yesterday they began filming, they are already onto episode six.
However, that means they are only a third of the way through as next season is set to be a bumper one due to six being shortened by Caitriona Balfe's pregnancy and worries over the pandemic.
He said: “This season is going to take a while, it’s an 18-episode bumper mega season, so we probably won’t be finished until March or February of next year."
Though fans will love the update, many will be disappointed that this likely means the show won't return until late next year, if Starz follows the usual route of filming and post-production.
With Droughtlander already dragging by, lovers of the show will be desperate to see how things play out after the cliffhanger of season six with Jamie on his way to rescue Claire.
There is hope though, with the season being so big it is possible that they might split it over two showings, with the first half being shown first possibly later this year (helping close the story arc for season six) and the second half being shown in 2023.
Starz have yet to confirm this though and in the Esquire interview, even Sam himself admitted he didn't know.
