Outlander prequel to begin filming in Glasgow in January as Sam Heughan predicts it will outshine original

It’s a bittersweet time to be an Outlander fan. With filming set to get underway in September for the much anticipated eighth and final season of the smash hit drama filmed and set in Scotland, and the second part of series seven hitting screens in the new year, there’s lots to look forward to.
But loyal followers know that the ultimate ‘Droughtlander’ looms after the final episodes are broadcast, when the much-loved programme comes to an end after a decade on the air.
There has been good news on the horizon for avid fans of the historical time-travel drama, with prequel Blood of My Blood being planned to fill the Outlander-shaped hole in people’s lives.
And it’s one step closer to becoming a reality as filming is set to begin in Glasgow on January 8, with the series expected to air in 2025.
A number of roads in the city's west end will close from January 7 as crew take to the streets to film the spin-off.
Blood of My Blood follows the story of Jamie Fraser's parents Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser and has current Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts at the helm. Outlander’s Maril Davis will produce the prequel with Ronald D. Moore, while author Diana Gabaldon is writing the prequel and will be back once again as consulting producer.
Speaking at the time of the news being confirmed, President of Original Programming at Starz, Kathryn Busby told Deadline: “Outlander is a riveting show that from season to season has captured the hearts of its fans around the world.
