Images a new fire station Whitefield – which will replace the ‘outdated’ current building, which ‘no longer meets the needs of a modern fire service’ – have been revealed. Originally build in the mid 1960s, Whitefield Fire Station on Bury New Road, serves the town and surrounding areas.
Plans lodged earlier this month with Bury Council, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service said it is essential they are able to continue operations from the site to provide an adequate level of fire and rescue cover. A design and access statement with the plans, said: “It is therefore proposed to redevelop the existing site to provide a new fire station and associated ancillary training facilities.
“Due to the significant extent of the redevelopment, it will not be feasible to continue operations from the existing building during the redevelopment work and thus a temporary fire station will need to be provided. “Practicalities have meant that providing a temporary fire station off-site would be not present a viable solution and thus the temporary fire station will need to be provided within the curtilage of the current site, whilst the redevelopment work takes place.
“The proposed fire station represents a newly developed and adopted standardised model which will be implemented on this and other sites.” The service added that they were collaborating with the North West Ambulance Service to provide shared provision across a network of sites and as such the development will incorporate a single parking space for an emergency ambulance.
