One of the most touching traditions at the Oscars is the In Memoriam section of the show. This is where someone goes on stage and introduces a musical montage that showcases some of the film and TV folks that passed away over the past year.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, just made history as the first Black women to win the Academy Award for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. The duo accepted the outstanding honour in person at the Union Station in Los Angeles, alongside the third member of their styling team, makeup artist Sergio Lopez-Rivera.

Daniel Kaluuya, beacon of unstoppable charisma, provided much of the night’s laughter, along with a seemingly game-for-anything Glenn Close. It was also difficult to take issue with many of the wins – every major film seemed to get something or other, and Minari’s Yuh-Jung Youn got to deliver another salty acceptance speech after her show-stealing performance at the Baftas earlier this month.

Nomadland, the drama from Chloé Zhao starring Frances McDormand, was awarded the evening’s top prize, which rounds out its impressive awards haul since it first premiered in 2019. Zhao accepted the award, thanking “the people on the road” for showing the film’s cast and crew “what true kindness looks like”.

“Nomadland” has wandered straight into the Academy Award for best picture.
