Oprah Winfrey and Niecy Nash-Betts to Be Honored at GLAAD Media Awards

Marc Malkin Senior Editor, Culture and Events Oprah Winfrey and Niecy Nash-Betts will be honored at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on March 14. Winfrey will be presented with the Vanguard Award for championing allyship and making a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues.
Nash-Betts will receive the Stephen F. Kozak Award, which is given to a person who raises visibility for LGBTQ people and issues.
“When Oprah speaks, the world listens and our community cherishes her as an unapologetic ally, especially to transgender people. Winfrey’s commanding career will forever align her on the right side of history,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement, in part, on Thursday.
She said of Nash-Betts, who hosted the GLAAD Media Awards in 2021, “Nash has redefined and expanded the role of Black queer women in entertainment and, along with her wife Jessica, has become a possibility model to queer women everywhere.” Variety goes into the night with two GLAAD nominations for magazine overall coverage and outstanding online journalism for Tiana DeNicola’s Michaela Jaé Rodriguez cover video for Power of Women, Other nominees include “All of Us Strangers,” “And Just Like That…,” “Bottoms,” “The Color Purple,” “Deadloch,” “Despierta America,” “Everything Now,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Heartstopper,” “Kokomo City,” “The Last of Us,” “Our Flag Means Death,” “Red, White and Royal Blue,” “Rustin,” “Sin Huellas,” “Ted Lasso” and “Yellowjackets.” The gala, taking place at the Beverly Hilton, will be hosted Wayne Brady and also include a performance by David Archuleta at the evening’s official after-party.
