‘We didn’t know what was going to happen in the next minute, 10 minutes, 10 days. We didn’t know how she was going to wake up.’
Baby Honey woke up as her usual happy and healthy self, ready for a day out with her aunty. But during an otherwise completely normal trip to the shops in Bury, the family was about to experience the most ‘awful’ moment of their lives, and something they ‘never want to see ever again’.
One moment that day, Honey’s aunty took a playful picture of her in her sunglasses in a shopping centre. The next moment, one of the baby’s eyes ‘started to roll’ and she began violently fitting.
“It all just happened so fast. One minute my baby was smiling in her sunglasses, the next minute she was in an A&E bed with 15 doctors around her – all within half an hour,” said terrified mum, Kelly Egan.

Last month, Kelly had left her baby, Honey, in the care of her sister while she went to the hairdresser. Kelly, 35, had planned to go straight to work afterwards at Wythenshawe Hospital, where she works as a maternity assistant.
“That morning, the baby was absolutely fine. She didn’t have a temperature, she wasn’t unwell, she hadn’t been ill recently, she’d just got up and eaten her breakfast,” Kelly told the Manchester Evening News.
“My sister sent me a picture of Honey in Asda with her sunglasses on – it was only five minutes before she started fitting.”
All day Honey had seemed perfectly normal, but when one of the baby’s eyes started to roll, Honey’s aunty Stacey started to ‘panic’, said Kelly.
