An expert has shared what snacks you should never put in your children's lunchbox.
Making school lunches can feel like an endless job, especially if you've got multiple to prepare. Parents always want to make sure what they are feeding their kids is healthy and nutritious, but also foods that they will enjoy.
It may seem harmless to include a sweet or salty snack to a packed lunch, but these kinds of high sugar foods can negatively impact your child's schooling as they hinder concentration. According to nutrition expert Jenna Hope, parents should avoid chocolate bars and crisps as they contribute to the afternoon crash.
Speaking to Femail, the nutritionist explained: "High sugar foods can contribute to causing blood sugar spikes and crashes in children which can impact concentration and behaviour at school. As a result, high salt, high sugar snacks such as crisps and sweets should be kept to a minimum on a day to basis."
Although, she says that you shouldn't completely ban these treats and "occasions such as birthdays, they should definitely still be allowed," the Mirror reports.
The food you give children has a huge impact on their development and Jenna advises parents should be packing kids up with a mixture of protein, healthy fats, and different fruits and veggies. The specialist also highlighted that parents should be enforcing positive views on food so their children can develop healthy habits later in life.
She added: "The way in which we speak to children about food is vital and can have a knock on effect on their relationship with food later on in life. As a result, these foods shouldn't be labelled as 'treats' or 'bad foods'."
