A new alert issued for the UK means that the northern lights may be viewable in the skies tonight (December 1).
A red alert has been announced by AuroraWatch UK, which is run by the Space and Planetary Physics group at Lancaster University's Department of Physics, following an examination of geomagnetic activity measurements. The likeliness of an aurora taking place in the UK is generally split into four categories by the organisation; green, yellow, amber, and red.
According to AuroraWatch UK, a red alert indicates that an aurora event is "likely" and is likely to be seen by the naked eye from anywhere in the country. That means no matter where you are tonight, you may catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

To increase your chances of seeing the spectacular phenomenon, it is generally recommended to head to an area that will have clear skies and is free from light pollution, such as the countryside. Fortunately, you don't need any specialist equipment to see the display and can use your own set of peepers on their own.
Parts of the UK have already caught glimpses of the aurora borealis in the past few weeks, with parts of Northamptonshire and Northumberland reporting sightings at the start of November. However, the latest alert means even those across Greater Manchester could also catch a glimpse.
